What is Banoffee Pie?
The name is quite strange, so the first time I tried it and found out its name, I was confused about what kind of name it was and whether it had any special history. But when I researched it, I discovered that “banoffee” is an English word formed from two words: banana + coffee.
In a way, it’s like different flavors being deliciously prepared together under one name. Its texture is so creamy and gooey that once you try it, you won’t want to stop; you’ll want to keep your fork down just to have another bite. This recipe is very easy to prepare, so it’s beginner-friendly too.
Banoffee Pie Ingredients
- One 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, with label and sticker removed
- 300 g digestive biscuits
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 140 g unsalted butter (about 10 tbsp), melted & slightly cool
- 3 medium bananas, peeled & sliced into half-inch pieces
- 2 cups heavy cream
- One dark chocolate bar (optional)
Easy Banoffee Pie Recipe—Step-By-Step Guide
Prepare Dulce de Leche
- Put another wire rack into the large pot. Place the unopened can of milk on the side of the shelf. Place the can in a large pot & add room temperature water to the level where you can see it’s two inches in the pot. This is highly beneficial for safety reasons!
- After drying the meat, add it to the pot, set the heat to high, and allow the pot to a boil. Then, reduce the heat to a slow boil. Cook for 4 hours. After 30 minutes, let it sit and add boiling water to the can since it should remain covered throughout the process.
- Remove the can from the water bath and cover the top of the can with a towel. Give it at least an hour to cool in the water. Do not attempt to open a hot can—this may lead to some real trouble.
- After it has cooled, remove the lid of the can and pour the dulce de leche into a separate bowl. Add half a teaspoon of salt & mix until blended well.
Make Crust
- While the dulce de leche is simmering, combine the dry ingredients for the crust. Heat your oven to 350°F. Crush the digestive biscuits into crumbs—you can even bowl them into small crumbs by putting them in a plastic sack and then pounding them using a rolling pin.
- In this case, combine the crumbs with the rest of the salt. For the next step, pour heated butter over the crumbs and mix them. Transfer the mixture to a 9-inch tart pan and spread it uniformly to the sides and bottom. Take your fingers & a measuring cup to form a tight pack.
- Bake the crust until light golden brown and fragrant with butter for 25-30 minutes. Make sure it cools on a wire rack until totally cool.
Finishing the Tart
- After that, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form, so it will take about 6 minutes using a mixer.
- Once the crust has cooled, pour the dulce de leche onto the crushed banana slices on top of the dulce de leche.
- Cove chocolate a little warm in the microwave and cover the bananas with the whipped cream, applying a uniform layer on the fruits. To finish off the dish, add the chocolate a little warm in the microwave for about 10 seconds and make chocolate curls with the help of a vegetable peeler.
