Which Cheese Is Better: Grilled Cheese Or Cheese Tostie
What’s the Difference?
Both are tasty sandwiches with melted cheese inside toasted bread, but they’re made differently:
- A cheese toastie is made in a special sandwich machine that squishes it
- A slice of grilled cheese is made in a pan on the stove (like I do when my sandwich maker breaks!)
Which One’s Better?
You know what? It’s like deciding between ice cream flavors—everybody likes different ones! But this is what I think, making about a million of both (grilled cheese and panini)
The winner is grilled cheese. Here’s why:
The panini maker compresses the bread too flat. Even on the “thick” setting. Once I made one, it looked like someone had sat on it! 🙂
The biggest problem? When you squish it, the cheese runs out the sides. That means you can’t put in as much cheese as you want. And let’s be honest—the best part of these sandwiches is all that gooey, melty cheese! In a pan, you can add as much cheese as your heart desires (and trust me, I’ve tested those limits!).
Once, I tried to stuff so much cheese in my toastie maker that it looked like a cheese volcano had erupted in my kitchen. Now, I stick to making them in a pan where I can control things better!
What You Need For Oven-Toasted Grilled Cheese
- 2 pieces of your favorite bread
- 2 big spoons of butter (make sure it’s soft enough to spread!)
- 2 slices of cheese (I once tried using shredded cheese—what a messy adventure that was, so never buy it)
Step-By-Step Process To Make Grilled Cheese In A Toaster Oven
Step 1: Get Your Toaster Oven Ready
This makes your sandwich get more crispy so, shift the little metal rack to the bottom. I found this out after making a few soggy ones.
Step 2: The Hot Pan Trick
If you have no food in your baking pan, put it in the toaster oven along with the dish you made.
Step 3: Turn It Up!
Adjust a toaster oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and turn its function to “Bake”.
Step 4: Make Your Sandwich
Now for the fun part! Place the butter side down; butter one side of each slice of bread. Place one slice of bread on the plate, butter facing down, then place your cheese slices on top, then put the other slice of bread, with the butter on top of it. I can recall a time when I could not remember the side that was buttered and I ended up in a rather wet environment!
Step 5: Time to Cook
Here comes the tricky part! Oh yes! And make sure you wear your oven mitts or gloves while taking out that hot pan (I never used one and once my finger got burnt). Place your sandwich on it and then put it back into the oven if you have any left.
Step 6: Watch It Turn Golden
Let it simmer for 3-5 minutes, depending on the fineness of the heat, until the bottom is nicely browned. It’s like toasting marshmallows; you want a little color—but no blisters.
Pro Tip: Sometimes, I peek through the toaster oven window and watch the cheese melt, but the main thing is to be careful not to open the door too much, or all the heat will escape. (At that time, I kept checking and ended up with a barely melted sandwich.)
Step 7: The Big Flip
Remove the pan once more (remember your oven mitts), then gently flip the actual sandwich over using a spatula. Leave it for another 3-4 minutes, then put it back in again. Simply wait until the cheese is all stringy, the bottom is crispy, and the top turns golden brown.
Step 8: Final Step
Take out your masterpiece (mitts one last time!) and turn off the toaster oven (I have a sticky note on my fridge to do this!). Allow it to cool for just a bit—no one wants to burn their tongue! Then divide it into two and see how that cheese melts!! 😊
How Long To Cook Grilled Sandwiches In The Oven Toaster
Why It’s So Great
Amazingly, you can prepare an outstanding grilled cheese in under 10 minutes! If you add extra stuff (like tuna), it may take a little longer. When it comes to time, it depends. Once, I got carried away by my desire to stuff it as much as possible. I ended up preparing dinner relatively late.
Mix Up Your Cheese
Don’t stick to just one kind! Try these combos:
- Sharp cheddar + creamy Havarti (for the record, the second best after I tasted quite a few varieties).
- Swiss + gouda with a hint of the smoky flavor
It’s the truth—well, you can use any cheese.
How Can i Make It Extra Special
With different variations, your can make it extra special, like
- Sweet onions
- shredded chicken
- Mushrooms
Well, I used pesto and mustard for a more flavour kick.
I once tried to add leftover spaghetti, but that was not a very good idea; you can try if you really love spaghetti; this combo is not bad at all.
Helpful Tips for Making Grilled Cheese in a Toaster Oven
- Cut your sandwich into smaller pieces for easier flipping.
- Use bread that fits your toaster oven (I learned this the hard way!).
- Enjoy your sandwich right away while it’s hot & melty.
This toaster oven technique may be your new favorite way to cook! It’s perfect for late-night cravings (I’ve been there) or when you need a quick lunch. Experiment with different fillings to find out your favorite combination!

Daisy’s Recipe Notes About Oven Toaster Grill Cheese
Note: I had to estimate the butter and cheese quantities since this depends on the bread’s shape and size. “More is better than less,” is my general rule.
1. Bread—Any bread should do just fine; however, be mindful not to think as the cheese might not melt. To thin or so soft, just get smashed in the middle due to cheese.
This bread you need, well, for my sake, a proper sourdough, although I will let them go once this crazy crust that takes so hard, strict your teeth with crack it; proper good sourdough suffices.
2. Cheese choices—I believe a great grilled cheese demands you use both mozzarella again because of its excellent melting properties and properties and a flavored cheese because mozzarella doesn’t have many flavors. Vintage cheddar and Gruyere are my personal favorites.
Otherwise, I’ll use anything and everything—tasty Monterey Jack, Colby, Swiss, and cheddar.
Cheese slices work okay, but you get a better melt using shredded. I promise. (I’ve had a lot of experience with both!). Please grate your own – the packet shredded has anti-cancer agents and never melts.
