When I was doing a cooking course, it was around the 4th or 5th day, and I remember my chef telling me that it was unnecessary to have all the kitchen equipment available. However, using the right tools for the right things is a sign that you are a professional. At that time, I didn’t really understand what they meant. But let me explain: What do you use a tomato knife for?
I don’t know which knife is better for which cutting. For example, if you cut onions with the wrong knife, they don’t get cut properly, and as a result, many tears come to your eyes. On the other hand, selecting the wrong knife for fruits like tomatoes creates a juicy mess, and the tomatoes get wasted. If you cut tomatoes for a salad, neatness is essential, but how is that possible with the wrong knife?

What is a Tomato Knife?
Actually, now you might be wondering why I wrote a whole article about just a tomato knife. In fact, It’s a different kind of knife, and its forked tip makes it one of the best knives out there. For instance, if there’s a fruit that you want to cut into a circular shape, but then you need to remove the stem, doing so can spoil the fruit — I’ve personally experienced this. With the help of the forked tip, we can easily remove the stem. Additionally, it has a serrated blade.
Friends, the serrated blade features a zig-zag pattern, which allows you to cut through fruits and vegetables like tomatoes. These serrated blades are not necessarily faster, but they create a grip on whatever you’re cutting, reducing the force needed. It’s important because if we use a plain blade, the thick skin requires us to apply more force.
Why can’t you use a serrated knife if cutting through squishy fruits and vegetables is easier? I’m not saying that we shouldn’t use serrated knives; they are great, and I use them. However, if you need to remove something’s stem without damaging it, the tomato knife is the best choice due to its forked tip.

This knife is the best; its zig-zag patterned blade is my favorite (I mean serrated blade), and its handle is so easy to grip that it feels like it was built for this purpose. I used a tomato knife for the first time at my friend’s house since she had it, but she didn’t know it was specifically for this purpose. She cut a tomato, and juice was all over the cutting board. Then she used the knife and boom, a perfect slice every time. So, if you have this knife, use it now. And if you often cut squishy fruits or vegetables, you should buy them at least once.

How to Check The Best Tomato Knife In 2025 Before Buying
I have told you about the best knives, but if you go to a shop, you might not remember which one you should buy from. I will tell you some points to keep in mind. So when you buy a tomato knife, keep these points in mind, and I’m sure you will buy a good knife, and you won’t waste your money.
Blade material matters a lot; nowadays, many low-quality blades are available on the market. Always check for stainless steel or carbon steel whenever you buy a knife. I have carbon steel, and as far as I know, carbon steel is more durable (but I’m not rejecting the stainless steel option). You should buy whichever is available between the two.
I prefer an ergonomic handle because the more you use the knife, the more pressure you feel. So always check the handle before buying a knife. This option must be checked before buying, mainly if you use too much cutting.
The 3rd thing that I will prefer is blade design. I told you the design of a tomato knife contains 2 points: first, the first serrated blade (zig-zag design) and second, the forked tip, so make sure the knife is precisely a tomato knife before buying it.
The last point is its size. A tomato knife is usually bigger than a paring knife and generally smaller than a traditional chef’s knife. Its size must be 4.4-5.
So keep these points in mind whenever you shop to buy this knife.
